In the summer of 1845, Eyre Crowe was 20 years old. He was living in London and preparing for entrance to the Royal Academy Schools. His father Eyre Evans Crowe lived on Haverstock Hill in north London, not far from Hampstead village.

The watercolour was one of a set of three (unrelated) watercolour sketches offered for auction by Charleston Estate Auctions, Mt Pleasant, Charleston, USA, on 25 June 2017 (Lot 285). It had previously been owned by an art dealer or gallery owner in Charleston. Any further provenance is not known.
