This small painting is dated ‘Portel, October 3rd 1855’, with the name ‘Eyre Crowe’ added. The boats look similar to those in Hauling the Boat Ashore – Scene at Portel, Coast of France (c.1857) and this is likely to be a painted sketch for that picture.
